Seattle Beer Week 2015: Charging Hippo Brewers Dinner at the Watershed Pub

Magical, that’s what this was. What other Seattle Beer Week event featured great beer and food pairings along with beer talk and songs by Charging Hippo brewer/Kirby Krackle frontman Kyle Stevens? Good beer, good food, fun songs, great company, and a cozy setting.

Seattle Beer Week 2015: Reuben’s Brews Night at Giddy Up Burgers & Greens

We were looking for something new tonight, so we decided to give Giddy Up Burgers & Greens a try. They teamed up with Reuben’s Brews, one of their Ballard neighbors, to host a dinner featuring their burgers and Reuben’s, well…brews.

Perfection in pint glasses and on liner paper…

The special allowed you to get any burger on their menu, but we both opted for the Guacamole Burger. It may sound tame from the name, but between the jalapeños in the “Awesome Sauce” and the jalapeños on top of burger itself, this burger is not to be trifled with.

Seattle Beer Week 2015: Blue Lightning

We first visited Blue Lightning Brew back in February during Washington Beer Open House. We were impressed with the beers (and their clever names), the knowledgeable staff, and the passion of the brewer that gave us the tour.

I was stoked when I saw that they were participating in Seattle Beer Week. A great reason to check in again. Blue Lightning was offering Happy Hour prices all day, as well as a chance to win prizes (including a Mug Club membership!)

Seattle Beer Week 2015: Drake’s Pint Night, Toronado

Day two of Seattle Beer Week began with a long day at work.  Once again, gainful employment did its best to interfere with the enjoyment of beer.  Mercifully this only lasted until about 5pm at which time we were free to make the short trip north of downtown to Toronado, in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood.  We had been here a couple times before, and each previous visit was a bit magical in its own way.

The draw tonight was “Drake’s Pint Night”, a partial tap takeover where San Leandro, CA based Drake’s Brewing showcased eight of their beers. Our decision to hit this event was based mostly on this list of beers, as it included a couple IPAs, a couple sours, and a couple barrel-aged offerings.  This sounded right up our alleys.  So, without any further delay, let’s talk about some of the beers we tried!

Seattle Beer Week 2015: SEATTLE CASK-O-RAMA, Beveridge Place Pub

We start Seattle Beer Week at Beveridge Place Pub, where the event features cask brews from Seattle breweries.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the term, cask-conditioned beers are unfiltered, usually have less carbonation, and are traditionally served a little warmer than standard kegged beer. Done right, and served correctly, this can result in softer, more complex flavors.

Seattle Beer Week: What is Seattle Beer Week?

The answer to this question may seem obvious to those who have been involved with this event for several years, but it really is not that clear to the casual observer or would-be participant. Last year was our first year with Seattle Beer Week, and we struggled working out what it all meant and really wished someone had put together a guide or FAQ to help us navigate through the confusion that we encountered.  Our goal with this brief article is to get some questions answered up front for the ever-growing group of people who are curious about participating in this event.

Seattle Beer Week 2015 LogoWhat is Seattle Beer Week? In the simplest of terms, Seattle Beer Week is a celebration of fermentation that takes place each year early in May consisting of a loose confederation of events held at bars, restaurants, breweries and taprooms across the greater Seattle area.  These events include beer and food pairing dinners, opportunities to meet some of the people behind your favorite brews, brewery-based or themed tap takeovers, various specials on pints and growlers, and much more. Washington Brewer’s Festival 2014 – Father’s Day Weekend at Marymoor Park

Ray and I had been looking forward to attending the Washington Brewer’s Festival for months, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The Brewer’s Festival was held Father’s Day weekend at Marymoor Park in Redmond, and featured over 300 different beers from 88 different Washington breweries.

We attended on Saturday, and got in line for entrance around 11 am. The line went fast, but the wait was at least 20 minutes. Next year, we’ll try to get there a little earlier.

Pacific Northwest Cider Awards – 2014 Cider Festival

Pacific Northwest Cider Awards (PNWCA) held their first annual cider competition and three day festival this last weekend at The Woods, Seattle Cider Company’s tasting room. Ray and I attended the event and volunteered on Saturday and Sunday. We ended up volunteering at a pouring station, and had a blast!

The cider competition judging was held on Thursday, and the results of the judging were posted at the festival. Best in Show was awarded to the Schilling Cider “Ginger”. This is a crisp cider with a burst of ginger flavor. Really nice!

Seattle Beer Week – 11th Day (Last Day!)

Have you ever heard of an 11-day week before? Yeah, me neither. However, if it was going to happen to any week I am glad it happened to Beer Week! Janette and I were somewhat gassed from our anniversary party the previous day and from the other nine days of Beer Week events, so we decided to take it easy for the day. That doesn’t mean we didn’t get out and enjoy ourselves, but it does mean we did not seek out any Beer Week events.

Lovely day at Machine House in Georgetown. Can you believe no filters have been applied to this picture?

Seattle Beer Week – 10th Day

We took a day off from Seattle Beer Week to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. We had some friends over with lots of food and, of course, beer. As detailed in an earlier post, we brewed a special Anniversary IPA to hand out to our guests.

A bottle of our brew is pictured below. Our friend Kyle awesomely photobombed the pic taken by his wife, Nicole.
