Fire and Blood is the third in a limited edition series of Game of Thrones-inspired beers by Ommegang Brewery. Following the Iron Throne, a blonde ale, and Take the Black, a black stout, Fire and Blood is a red ale spiced with Ancho chilies.
Per the Ommegang website: “Named after the motto of House Targaryen, Fire & Blood was inspired by Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons; Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. To celebrate the rebirth of dragons, three different labels have been created, each depicting one of Daenery’s feared dragons.”
We happened upon a bottle of this at one of our favorite beer & wine shops, Full Throttle Bottles. As I was oohing and ahhing and fan-girling over a Game of Thrones-inspired beer, Ray casually quipped “Perfect for weddings!”
We decided to break it out on the premiere of the new Game of Thrones season. I had my nifty new Game of Thrones glass that I also picked up at the beer & wine shop, so I was ready to go!
It poured out of the bottle with a large cream head, the color was a deep amber brown. The aroma was overwhelmingly Belgian yeast, which kind of surprised me. It tasted of cloves with a slight fruit taste. The chilies were barely noticeable, very slight on the finish with no heat.
Overall, I liked it, but not as much as I was hoping to. I was expecting more of red ale taste and more chilies.
I haven’t been swept up by Game of Thrones, and this beer didn’t sweep me up either. Reds are not my style, and although I have been encountering many exceptions to this generalization lately, this brew was not one of them. My opinion is not going to be relevant to anyone, so I am going to forgo giving it.
